What is a tip calculator?

Tip calculation formula

Where rr is the tip rate as a percentage. Most U.S. restaurants expect tips between 15% and 20% for standard table service.

Worked example

On a $100 bill with an 18% tip for 2 people: tip equals $100 times 18%, or $18. Total equals $100 plus $18, or $118. Per person equals $118 divided by 2, or $59 each.

  • Round up always rounds tip and totals upward, useful when you want to err on the generous side.
  • Round down rounds toward zero, which can simplify cash payments.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax bill?
Etiquette varies, but many diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator uses the bill amount you enter, so use whichever base you prefer.
What is a standard tip percentage in the United States?
